Suggestions for Selecting an Agent:
- Establish a support system to help you (parents, coaches, teammates, etc.)
- Do not rely solely on educational background or titles
- Beware of an agent who advises an athlete to change positions while he’s still playing in college or high school
- Beware of an agent who wants to handle the player’s finances
- Question the agent about the fees for each of the services provided
- Consider an agent’s track record of maintaining clients for their entire career and post career
- Reject an agent who seems more concerned with quick money than with your long-term best interests
- Look for an agent who can and will devote sufficient time to your interests
- Avoid an agent who offers money or gifts as an inducement to sign
- Beware of outrageous claims by agents (Ex: “I represent many star athletes,” “I can get you drafted in the 1st Round,” “I can get you ____ million”)
- Avoid an agent who, by his own admission or practice, violates laws or rules
- Seek an agent who will take the time to explain the answers to your questions
- Seek an agent who will support you through bad times, and not just the good times
