NPG Sports client spotlight #2 shines on Brett Newsome, 1b, Washington Nationals organization.

Brett was signed by the Nationals in 2008 as an undrafted free agent following his stellar junior season at St. Ambrose (Iowa) University. While at St. Ambrose, Brett hit an astounding .470, and was named the 2008 Midwest Collegiate Conference Player of the Year. Additionally, he led the team with a .792 slugging percentage, 70 hits, 63 RBIs, 20 doubles and 8 home runs.

Brett’s first assignment with the Nationals was with their Rookie League club for both the 2008 and 2009 seasons. Brett finished his ’09 season with the team hitting.318/.423/.566, 6 HRs, 35 RBIs. He was then promoted to the team’s Class A team in Hagerstown, Maryland, where he ended up hitting .400 in 15 at bats. For his efforts, Brett was recognized by at least one baseball website (www.standardprospects.blogspot.com) as the Nationals top hitting prospect.

Brett started the 2010 campaign picking up where he left off in 2009 with the Hagerstown club. Brett adds exceptional hitting, patience, and efficiency skills to the Nationals organization, and we expect him to continue to impress.
