The Blue Jays lost the series opener to the Twins on Thursday night, with three more games coming Friday-Sunday.
Varland is being used as Toronto’s closer. He has a 0.56 ERA and has allowed just one earned run through his first 15 appearances this season. He has struck out 26 batters in 16 innings.
The Twins traded Varland at last summer’s deadline. He was moved for pitcher Kendry Rojas and outfielder Alan Roden. He had spent his entire four-year big league career with his hometown team before the transaction.
Varland was selected by the Twins in the 15th round of the 2019 Draft.
