STAT TO NOTE
.034 — Opponents’ batting average against Tyler’s four-seamer in a short-sample (119 pitches) in the majors in 2021, compared to opponents’ .545 batting average against the 59 sliders he threw during his debut.

TRENDING
Up — A 20th-round pick out of Oklahoma in 2018, Tyler had a 2.59 ERA over 121 2/3 innings at the Angels’ A-ball affiliates in 2019 before losing all of 2020 to the pandemic. Back in action last year, Tyler emerged as the most reliable arm in a Double-A Rocket City rotation that included Angels top prospect Reid Detmers. He struck out 73 batters over 72 innings (3.38 ERA, 1.19 WHIP), threw another 14 innings at Triple-A Salt Lake (5.14 ERA, 1.64 WHIP) and finished the year in the majors until a right toe sprain sent him to the injured list. Ranked No. 39 in the Angels’ system by Baseball America, Tyler was in camp in Tempe, Ariz., until he was designated for assignment to make room for right-hander Ryan Tepera. The Red Sox claimed Tyler first but set him free after claiming another reliever, allowing the Padres to claim him last week. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-hander James Norwood was designated for assignment.

2022 OUTLOOK
While Tyler made his MLB debut as a reliever, he figures to serve as rotation depth that the Padres can stash at Triple-A El Paso or perhaps even use as a long man with expanded rosters in April. He pairs a 91-93 mph fastball with a slider and a developing change-up.
